Upcoming School Year

I don't know about you, but I am not looking forward to school starting back up. My "middle child," Cadence started on Thursday at the private school. Our oldest, Cassidy, doesn't go until Tuesday. To me, the school year signals not only the end of summer, but the beginning of fall. Fall is such a short season here in Wisconsin, and when we finally begin to enjoy the colors, the awful snow hits! :(

Going back to school also means that my husband heads back to work. I do enjoy having him around during the summer, as he is always a big help around the house or office and especially with our daughters.

Every summer it seems like I find myself scratching my head come September, wondering What Happened to the Summer?

2010 Employee of the Year

Yesterday we officially announced the 2010 Clintonville Chronicle Employee of the Year.

The winner is....

...Bonnie Kersten!

Bonnie puts in a lot of time and energy in all of her assignments. She does her job with a smile on her face and an effervescent attitude. We owe a lot to Bonnie. We value her as an employee, every day.

Choose such an honoree is no easy task, however, as we have other amazing employees, as well. The 2011 EOY will be awarded in December. That will be tough again to choose the recipient.

Congratulations to you, Bonnie. We think the world of you, Princess! :)

RIP, Trygg Hansen

It broke my heart when I read the email the other day. Fellow newspaper junkie, Trygg Hansen had an unexpected heart attack and was found dead in his home.

Trygg was an amazing, cantankerous man with one heck of a sense of humor!

Rest in peace, Trygg. We will never forget you!

Hello, Readers!

My apologies for not writing anything sooner. We have been extremely busy at the newspaper. No matter what anyone says, there is always something going on in Clintonville! :)

We have recently given our blog a new, updated look to go along with our new, modernized website. It is our hope that these two places will enable you to feel more familiar with the Chronicle family and provide us valuable feedback to make your newspaper everything that you hope it to be.

New Business of the Year Award

Last night we won the the "New Business of the Year" award from the Chamber of Commerce, for the second year in a row! Woo Hoo you guys! Let's celebrate with another potluck (#12? and counting...)

And Happy Birthday to our 'friend' Bonnie who makes us laugh! :)

How Far We've Come!

It is with great excitement that I say that last week we achieved a milestone at the Chronicle, Subscriber Number 1,000!

As I prepare to send the mailing list to the printer tomorrow, I see we already have 1,012--we gained more than ten in just one week! It is very exciting.

We had a special goodie package for the winner, Jill Rogers, Clintonville. Jill received: a tote bag, a t-shirt, a keychain, a mug, a mousepad, a notepad, two pens, three small magnets, one large magnet, $25 in Chamber Bucks, and a free second-year subscription! Total value of the package was more than $100! Thanks for your support, Jill! We're happy to have you!

In getting the list ready today, one of our new employees, Lauren, asked how many subscribers we have in Bear Creek (where she lives). In looking that info up for her, I noticed the following. More than 700 of our subscribers live in Clintonville. We have subscribers in 21 states now (it was 17 in January). Only 58 papers leave the state of Wisconsin. That's pretty awesome!

We Work, We Laugh, We Bake

It's amazing how stressful it can get here at the office. Lots of people think we just hang out and have a good time, but deadlines rule our work week!

If you catch us being silly and giggly, (we get like that) it's probably because we need a break from whatever is fueling our 'pressure cooker' that week; breaking stories, community events etc. FYI-Monday is Press Day, so if you can, call us on any other day rather than Mondays, we'd appreciate that because we're usually in overdrive trying to get the paper to bed before the rest of Clintonville is sleeping! (Yes! Tricia and Shelly have been spotted in the office until 3 am!)

I've worked at several newspapers in Wisconsin and Minnesota and I've told people once you start working in the newspaper business, you're addicted! So if you're thinking about being a reporter, photographer or designer, know that it won't take long until you're hooked.

But don't let my post fool you, working for a small town paper has its perks too, including being an integral part of the community, getting the inside scoop before anyone else and the frequent potluck, where we get a chance to hone our culinary skills! I'm hoping to acquire the Baking Queen Award in 2010!

Greg came by and dropped off "Laack's Finest Sharp Cheddar Cheese" spread at the office. O-kaaayyyy... just another day at the office, I guess.

Rain Rain Rain

I know everyone says we need the rain but really this is enough already. There is a river running down the sidewalk and the road in front of the office. Suzanne and I have decided we would like a really big thunderstorm. So if the weather is going to be like this, please just give us some big thunder boomers.

Oh, Woe is Me!

It was...horrible. Today, I saw her. My old car. My Mustang was the nicest car I've ever owned. It was so perfect. It was sleek, Atlantic blue, dual exhaust, five speed manual, with black tinted windows and decals throughout. It was an absolute joy to drive. I truly don't think I've ever fully gotten over her... :(

I teared up a little when I saw her in Embarrass today...

Spring Sightings

If you've walked around town lately, you'll see a few of things; familiar faces taking walks, the thawing of Pigeon Lake and the first hardy flowers beginning to bloom. These are all welcome signs of spring in our little town.

On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, Grand Chute Detectives arrested a 36-year-old Minnesota man in connection with the sexual assault that occurred on March 10th at the Fox River Mall.

Information was obtained from an individual that watched the video and thought the suspect resembled an acquaintance visiting the Appleton area during that time period.

Detectives traveled to Minnesota on Tuesday to interview the Minnesota man and ultimately arrested him for the assault of the 13-year-old girl.

The Grand Chute Police Department would like to thank the local media for keeping this story in the forefront. Had it not been for the attention the media gave to this story and daily playing of the suspect video, this case may not have been resolved as quickly.
